Agustín de Iturbide, born Acatempan, Michoacán, on September 27, 1783, played a pivotal role in Mexico's independence struggle and establishment as an empire.
Military Career and Early Life
The son of a Spanish nobleman and a Creole mother, Iturbide joined the Spanish army in 1798, rising to the rank of colonel by 1820.
Initially, he suppressed Mexican uprisings against Spanish rule (1809-1810), but his allegiance shifted in 1819 when he joined the insurgent cause.
