The traffic signal and corded bed: 8 Black inventors you didn't know were from Kentucky
Every time you drive safely through a busy intersection, you can thank Kentuckian Garrett Morgan.
Morgan was a Kentucky-born, Black inventor in the early 1900s, and this year marks the 100th anniversary of when he invented the three-position traffic signal.
Morgan was wealthy enough that he owned a car in Cleveland during the early 1920s when roads were a mix of buggies, bicycles and vehicles, and accidents were relatively common.
Road signals at the time merely had a "stop" and a "go" feature. His center position on his three-part signal was the precursor yellow for the warning between "stop" and "go" on the modern traffic lights we know today.
He also invented the gas mask, which was patented in 1914, and used by the U.S.
Army during World War I.
